How long does physio take to get results?
This is a great question but one that is challenging to answer as there are so many factors that go into this.
This may differ from person to person, even those in a similar situation.
Factors that contribute to results include:
the nature, intensity and severity of the condition/injury
overall health
lifestyle including day to day demands such as work
activity levels
consistency of treatment recommendations including prescribed exercises and self-management techniques.
It is important to keep in mind that sometimes pain or symptom levels may stay similar initially with an increase in functional load/activity or vice versa.
Even though it may feel that results are not there or are slow, this is still an improvement and is a testament to your body adapting and becoming more resilient.
For minor injuries such as sprains or strains, a few physio sessions may be enough to see improvement depending on your goals.
Chronic conditions may improve with a few sessions but may require ongoing treatment and noticeable improvements may take weeks to months.
Post-surgical treatment may have quick initial improvements within the first few weeks, though generally take longer for a full recovery.
For strengthening muscles, the first few weeks come from neuromuscular adaptations (increased efficiency in recruiting muscle fibers) followed by muscle hypertrophy (typically 6-8 weeks of consistent strength training).
Long-term consistent and progressive training is needed to continue to see results. Many times your physio will discharge you with home exercises and recommendations to continue your physio progress or prevent further injury.
Your physio can provide a more individualized answer after your initial session, though it is important to keep in mind that this can change depending on the factors mentioned above and how your body responds to different types of treatment.
If you ever have questions about your treatment plan, please don’t hesitate to ask your physio.
