What happens in a physio session?
If this is your first physio session at the clinic, your physiotherapist will start with an initial assessment.
They will get to know you and your situation through subjective questions, including a medical history, and an objective assessment. Questions may include details on the reason for your visit (i.e. injury, chronic health condition), your concerns, goals and expectations.
The objective assessment may include posture, functional movements (i.e. walking, stairs, bothersome movements), joint range of motion, strength testing, neurological scans and special tests for specific joints/conditions.
Following the assessment, your physio will explain to you their findings and diagnoses (if applicable) and create a treatment plan with your input that incorporates your goals, priorities and lifestyle.
Since our initial assessments are 1 hour in length, treatment immediately follows assessment.
Depending on your situation and how your body responds to treatment and exercise, your physio may prescribe exercises on your first visit to do as homework before your next session.
Subsequent sessions can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes in length depending on your needs and focus on treatment and reassessment, as with time, symptoms, functional patterns and goals change.
Different treatment techniques include:
physical techniques such as manual therapy (mobilizations, manipulations, soft tissue etc.)
needling (dry needling, acupuncture, IMS)
education
exercise (strengthening, stretching, cardio/endurance)
clinical pilates (if booked with a physio offering clinical pilates)
